Garage interior design: 10 ideas for storage, flooring and lighting

Active garage The interior is built on three basic elements: a coated floor (epoxy or polyurethane €30–40/m²), LED lighting sized for the application (200–300 lux for storage, 500–1,000 for working) and storage mounted on the walls. The rest is finishing touches – pick the ideas that suit your own garage from the list.

1. Coat the floor with epoxy or polyurethane

The price of an industrial-grade epoxy or polyurethane coating is typically €30–40/m², and a professional coating of a 20–40 m² garage costs around €1,500–3,500. The surface is resistant to studded tires, oils and washing. Polyaspartate coating is a premium option: it cures in a day and is resistant to UV light. Concrete paint is the cheapest, but it does not withstand studded tires – it is only suitable for light warehouse use. The entire floor project, including the foundation work, typically costs €2,000–7,000 in a one-car garage, with an average of around €4,400. Clickable PVC tiles are a laborious and expensive option compared to coatings, mainly for representative and hobby garages.

2. Install the wall rail system

You hang cabinets, shelves and hooks on the wall rails and move them as needed. The goods are lifted off the floor, and the car can fit back in. The system can withstand heavy loads and grow as needed – start with one wall.

3. Perforated board keeps tools on display

A perforated board mounted on the back of your workstation keeps your hand tools visible and organized. An affordable and endlessly customizable classic. Paint the outlines of your tools on the board and each tool will return to its place.

4. Closed cabinets for chemicals

Paints, oils and detergents belong in a closed, preferably lockable cabinet – out of reach of children and protected from dust. Closed doors also calm the overall look of the garage interior.

5. Utilize the roof for seasonal goods

Roof racks are the best place for things you rarely need: tires, ski boxes, and kayaks off the walls and floor. Size the racks and brackets according to the load and leave space for the lift door track.

6. Size LED lighting according to use

For storage, 200–300 lux is sufficient, or about 3,000–5,000 lumens for a 15–20 m² garage. For working, 500–1,000 lux and spotlights for the workstation are needed. Choose a color temperature of 4,000 K and an IP class according to the space: dry warm garage IP20, cold or damp IP44, washing area IP65. 1–2 efficient LED panels are sufficient for a one-car garage, 3–4 for a two-car garage. A motion sensor turns on the lights when your hands are full. Place the lights on both sides of the car and not just in the center line so that the car does not shade the work next to the doors. No more investing in fluorescent tubes – their sale in the EU has ended.

7. Build a proper workstation

A sturdy workbench, at least 500 lux of light and separate socket groups for work tools. In 2026, the garage will increasingly be a hobby and workshop space, not just a place to park a car – size the electricity accordingly. The worktop doesn't have to be expensive: a sturdy plywood top with sturdy legs will go a long way.

8. Add an electric car charging point

A purpose-designed 11 kW charging station will cost 1,300–3,500 euros in 2026, including equipment and installation, and will charge at approximately 60 kilometers per hour. A household deduction is available for installation work: 35% of the work share, up to a maximum of 1,600 euros per person – an increase to 40% and 2,100 euros is pending retroactively for 2026. Charging from a regular socket is only a temporary solution: the current must be limited to 8 amps and the electrical system must be checked by a professional. Continuous trickle charging is a fire risk and can jeopardize insurance compensation.

9. Divide the stable into zones

Reserve one wall for yard tools, a corner for car maintenance, and a dedicated area for your workstation. When every item has a place, order also stays intact – and you don’t have to spend half your Saturday searching for it. Zoning also makes it easier to plan lighting: general lighting for the entire space, spotlights for the workstation.

10. Fix security

Fire extinguisher and first aid kit in a visible place, flammable substances in sealed containers. A working smoke alarm is a basic requirement for charging an electric car, and the charging cable must not be pulled through doors or windows from inside. In a heated garage, the insulation level of the lifting door also has an effect: a well-insulated door (U-value approx. 0.4 W/(m²K)) significantly reduces heating bills compared to a standard door (approx. 1.0 W/(m²K)).

In what order will the renovation be carried out?

First the floor in an empty garage, then the electrical and lighting, and finally the storage systems and furniture. In this order, the garage interior is completed without double work. Floor coating requires empty space and drying time, so it is the most laborious to do afterwards in a furnished garage.
