Building terms, explained in plain English

BUILDER'S GUIDE

Design responsibilities, energy certificates, what is and is not included in a quote – building has a vocabulary of its own. These articles explain the terms and the figures behind them. Note that the regulations, prices and permit procedures described are Finnish: use them to understand how the process works, then check the equivalent rules where you are building – in the UK that means planning permission, the Building Regulations and an EPC.

Building your own home is a long series of decisions, and most of them are easier once you know what the words mean. These articles are written from Finnish practice – the principles carry across borders even where the figures and the legislation do not.
